Meet Georgina

Georgina took the time to share how pregnancy was a big journey for her. She expressed that she faced a lot of fears and challenges and could not even find the words to express how big her struggles were. While pregnancy can be a joyous occasion for many individuals, it can be a time of stress, fear, isolation, and uncertainty for many. Add navigating other life circumstances and it can be quit debilitating.

Georgina found out about BREATHE Midwives through a social media group that she is part of which helps individuals connects with resources in the community.

Georgina talks about finding out about Breathe midwives

Georgina share honestly how she did not believe that there was an organization that existed that was willing to help her and her unborn baby. She stated that it wasn’t true, how could it be possible. She wasn’t sure. Once she came to our office, she realize that it was real.

Georgina thoughts on whether or not BREATHE Midwives really helps people like her.

Georgina had been looking for access to care in her community Barrie, and no luck. After an almost a Two hour journey to our clinic she was able to find care from our amazing midwife Tenisha who supported her and encouraged her through everything.

 

But there was still a hurdle – the lack of services in her own backyard. After finally getting the support she needed to ensure her and her baby were being taken care off, Georgina made the decision to relocate to be closer to the new family she found in BREATHE Midwives. This reality is not new for many individuals who have to travel just to get access to safe care. Add the need to find culture affirming care, the journey can even be harder and further!

“My sense of fear was no more”

I felt valid

Feeling valididated and heard when it come to your health is what Black individuals have been asking for.

Georgina share how previously before coming to BREATHE Midwives, she did not feel like she existed. She talks about how that feeling of existence came to her once she came to our organization. This is a very common feeling for many Black individuals when it come to accessing culturally competent care in the health care system. Like Georgina, many people seek places like BREATHE Midwives want to be heard, seen, and validated. A place they can feel safe and trust the people and systems. A place where they can just be themselves.
