“Access to culturally competent care is so important because it provides a safe, understanding, and inclusive space for people from all backgrounds to receive the support they deserve. As a Ghanaian woman, I needed guidance when I found out I was pregnant and didn’t know where to go until my aunty shared a flyer from BREATHE Midwives. I started care at seven weeks pregnant and continued through delivery and my 6 week postpartum check. Abigail and the team made me feel completely at home. Every fear, question, and doubt was met with kindness and understanding. It wasn’t just about maternity care, it was also about mental and emotional support. Being uninsured, I was deeply grateful that I received compassionate care without financial worry. BREATHE Midwives was truly a blessing to me”

“Access to culturally competent care is important because it reduces health disparities, improves health outcomes, and increases patient satisfaction by ensuring that healthcare providers understand and respect a patient’s cultural, social, and linguistic needs. This approach leads to better quality of care by addressing the diverse beliefs, communication styles, and values that can affect a patient’s health and their willingness to seek care.”

I’m living in Canada for two years. To me Access to culturally competent care is important because it helps people like me feel understood, respected, and supported by healthcare providers who recognize our background and values. It makes a big difference when care feels personal and welcoming — especially for newcomers adjusting to a new health system.
