POOR BIRTHING OUTCOMEs

Black birthing individuals are more likely to have poor birthing outcomes. While race specific data and studies are not collected in Canada, we can extrapolate the data from other studies know that they are 3 to 5 times more likely to experience injury or death compare to other groups.

PRETERM LABOUR AND BIRTH

Black birthing individuals have a high rate of preterm labour and preterm births. This has significant implications as it is a leading cause of infant mobility and mortality.

REPRESENTATION MATTERS

Some studies have shown that there is significant improvement in outcome for black individuals and their newborns when they have a caregiver who is black. Unfortunately only 3% of healthcare providers are black.

BIRTH IS HAPPENING

According to statics Canada 4 in 10 Black individuals are born in Canada making it the top place for birth. 4.8% of Canada’s population identify as Black, yet they are one of the population who have the highest rate of morbidity and mortality, undsererved, and face social justice inequities.

INCREASED RISK OF CONDITIONS

Did you know that Black birthing individuals are at increase risk of 1) hypertension disorders of pregnancy, 2) higher rates of caesarean sections; 3) higher rates of gestational diabetes; 4) high rate of prevalence of food insecurity; 5) higher rates of stillbirth and miscarriages; 6) higher rates of mental health illness.

MY PAIN AND CONCERNS MATTERS

Did you know that Black individuals are likely to have their pain and concerns dismissed. This stems from unethical studies and test done on black individuals that concluded that they do not feel pain the same way. This has lead to direct and implicit biases affecting the care of black individuals.
